2013 Derby City 14.1 Challenge Quarter-Finals Max Eberle Vs. Alex Pagulayan

Here is the quarter-final match from this year’s Derby City 14.1 Challenge.  I had only played Alex 14.1 one time, in the 2011 World 14.1 Tournament, and he won.  He had just beaten me in the bank division at the Derby 3-1 in the 5th round, and I was ready to return the favor!  This is a 10-Foot Diamond “Bigfoot” Table.

Three More Secrets To Playing Consistent Pool

Hello my friend,

Here are Three more secrets to playing consistent pool:

8:  Always have a goal…   What I’m referring to here is have a goal on each shot.  Decide where you want the cue ball to go, ideally a specific spot (for a specific positional reason).  Just doing this will now put you in the big league of mental planning and focus.  All of your body/mind/stroke efforts will be guided by this goal that you decide on each and every shot.  Be disciplined.  Have a goal.

9:  Practice by yourself whenever possible…   So often I hear players tell me that they can’t practice.  These usually are not the players anyone has to worry about.  Put the time in consistently.  Learn to love the game for the game.  Practice should not be boring if you have a lot to master and learn.

10:  Master all the bridges…   99.9% of all the players who come to me for lessons have issues with their bridge, and usually they had no idea.  Practice, perfect, and solidify your many bridges.  Your game will take an immediate and lasting jump upwards.  No joke.

Ok I want to hear good stories about victories and breakthroughs!

See you soon…

Seven Keys To Playing Consistent Pool

Playing consistent pool is the result of a combination of many factors that when combined, make you a more powerful pool player.

Here are Seven Keys To Playing Consistent Pool (I’ll be revealing more soon)

1.  Stay in the present moment….  It is easy to get distracted by thoughts of the past and future, the score, the crowd and what they may be thinking of you…  bring yourself back to the task at hand in the moment and stay there.

2.  Play with rhythm….  This may well be the master key to consistency.  Find your routine, your stroking/eye pattern, your ideal pace… and stick to it.  Focus on playing with this tempo and stroke pattern in competition and you will find yourself winning a lot more matches.

3.  Have an attitude of constant improvement….    Resting on your laurels will insure one thing, that you will slowly lose your edge and lose consistency.  Keep improving.  Even if you can’t stop thinking and talking about the glory days when you “never missed a ball and always ran out from everywhere,” tell yourself that your best playing is ahead of you no matter what, and you are simply going to prove it by improving your game.

4.  Turn weaknesses into strengths with work….    How consistent can you really be if you keep getting stopped by a weakness that you are just too lazy to fix?  Turning it into a strength will also increase your general confidence which will be a side effect of even more consistency in your game.

5.  Keep your body still during your actual stroke through the cue ball….   Give yourself a chance and don’t be so sloppy.  You’ll be instantly 2-4 balls better if you can start keeping your body still.  No complaining.  Just stop moving your body.

6.  Master the fine tuned art of body positioning….  This is the real secret to consistency.  Master it and you’ll have extra time to breath and drink some coffee while your opponent whines while racking the balls for you 😉  LOL

7.  Practice the long straight in shot….   This will give you some reality and the opportunity to master reality.  Use it much to your advantage.  Stop, draw, follow, stun follow, drag draw, soft, medium, hard…  you’ll only become a better player and much more consistent.

There you are my friend, use these to your advantage and much to your delight!

Play POOL in the ZONE… Nutrition for YOUR BRAIN

Hello my friend,

I would like to share something with you that has benefited my pool game.

The very first night I used it I won a local 9-Ball tournament in Las Vegas in which I had to give most players 4, 5, or 6 games going to 10 in 9-Ball by lopsided scores of 10-1 and 10-2 etc…  my thinking was super clear, my mind felt clean, and I was able to focus very well.  The very next night I played a friend two races to 11 in 10 ball on a 4 inch pocket 9-foot Diamond and missed maybe 1 ball in 2 sets.  My cue ball control was on point and again my mind was very clear and focused on the task at hand.

Basically this stuff works.  At least it has for me and it may for you too.

I have a 10% discount set up for you through this link to the site or with discount code:  POOL

85 Ball Run In Straight Pool

Hello my friend,

Here is an 85 ball run in straight pool I made this past Sunday during the 2012 US Open Golf Tournament…

If you have played any 14.1, you know the importance of leaving a key ball (the last ball you pocket in a frame that sets you up for the break shot).  Possibly just as important is knowing your key to the key ball so that it is easier for you to play shape on your key ball.  During this run, keep your eye out for the second to last shot I make in each frame and the position of that ball as it relates to making the last ball before the break shot.

Planning a key to the key ball will help you run many more racks and you just might find you break your high run soon!

Good luck and skill in your 14.1 adventures!

10-Ball Break And Run #2… Get in the Game

Hello my friend,

Here is another 10-Ball break and run from the same morning as the last video.

The shot of the game was the one ball…not an easy shot to make or play position, and the cue ball ended up with a good carom to help get shape.  The lesson is that you still have to go for it and give the cue ball the best chance to get shape.  Even though it could have been cleaner with the shape, I gave myself a chance to win.  Next time you have a tough shot and position, just imagine it working out for you and go for it 100%!

Thanks for tuning in and I’ll see you soon!

10-Ball Break And Run…Efficiency

Hello my friend,

Here is a 10-Ball break and run at Best Billiards LV a few weeks ago…

Landing my cue ball on the wrong side of the 5 ball forced me to take a bank shot on the six ball.

Notice how after I’m standing and deciding what to do for each shot, I’m able to just get straight down into my stance from where I am standing.  This is not by accident.  I purposefully walk to my next shot and position my right foot where I want it to be for my next shot, that way I’m able to be efficient in getting into my stance without a lot of wasted energy.  Having my chalk available at all times by my side with the magnet also helps me there… so I’m not constantly moving around either searching for the chalk or trying to move it out of the way.

Become more efficient in your game, it may help a great deal.  Spend your energy in pocketing balls and running out and let your opponent spend all the energy racking or worrying about the score.

The Secret First Rail For Brilliant Cue Ball Control

I’ve said it before, that if you have been playing pool for any length of time, you know that one idea can make a big difference in your game.

Some ideas may work for you more than others.  That’s one reason why you want to constantly be on the lookout and search for the golden nuggets… here is one such nugget.  See how it works for you.

The back story includes my grandfather Pop’s philosophy that the cue ball is the only ball on the table… the only ball that matters.  He would tell me that anyone can make a shot, but it’s the player who can control the cue ball who controls the game.  And I’ll add to that shot making should become a given, of course you must pocket the ball consistently.

Now, when I was training with the late, great Jason Bowie in the Washington, DC area about 14 years ago, one of our lessons was that the object ball was simply the “first rail” that the cue ball had to contact en route to its destination.  I loved this concept!  It puts all the emphasis on the cue ball into your stroke and helps you mentally “assume” that you are making the object ball.  Of course the cue ball will react differently off of an object ball but the idea is interesting and potentially very helpful.  Just go test and see how it changes or helps your game, and if your cue ball control becomes better.  Remember, the cue ball is the only ball on the table!

Thanks Jason for that tip.  You are greatly missed but your legend lives on!

A Lesson In Confidence And Delivery From World Snooker Champ Stephen Hendry

Once you have created and mastered your fundamentals, being able to hook them up with confidence into every shot can make you a champion.  Many pool players have so much movement in their stance during delivery of the cue that it is laughable when compared to snooker players.  Why make it so hard on yourself to be great?  Why not just realize that you have got to stay still, and start staying still when you stroke your shot?

Watch this video of 7 time World Snooker Champion Stephen Hendry run a 147 at the recent 2012 World Snooker Championship (broght to my attention by Daniel Busch of povpool.com)

)

Watch how once he decides what to do, he just gets down into his stance perfectly and is ready to make the shot and move on to the next one.  Also, when he shoots he does not jump up, he stays down as if to exaggerate good form.

Whatever your fundamentals are, it is important to master them and position yourself into the shot with accuracy and confidence.  Do this and you will become better in an hour for the rest of your life.  You will beat players you only dreamed of beating before.  You will transform yourself into a champion.

See you soon,

Four Things Pool & Billiards Champions Consistently Do For Success…

If you are reading this, you want to be a better pool player.  Either you are already a champion and just want to win even more, or you know that you have what it takes to make it happen, and you just need to keep getting those little edges to advance your game.  Ok so that’s why I’ve made this little checklist for you today to help you make sure you are moving forward.

Here are four things that champions consistently do that allow them to keep winning, or at least win as much as possible…and that help them to keep improving.

Number 1:  Champions have clear intentions of their outcome.  They know where they want to make the ball, where they want the cue ball to land, and how they plan to get it there.  Champion pool players live in a universe of specificity when it come to what they are doing on the table.  the more specific, the higher their success will tend to be.  Also they know what they want to accomplish in a event… instead of saying “Oh I want to do pretty good,” they will say something like “How big is my first place check going to be?”   Instead of saying “I want the cue ball to be somewhere over there,” they say “I want the cue ball to land right there.”

Number 2:  Champions stay focused on what they want.  Instead of allowing their mind to wander into the bad things that could happen, they become good at deciding and then staying focused on their desired outcome.

Number 3:  Champions continually put in the work to develop or maintain the skills necessary to tackle all situations.  If and if there is something they don’t know, they are eager to learn a new technique or shot.

Number 4:  If something goes wrong, champions do not dwell on it, instead they get focused back into their goals and into a positive solution to fix the situation from that moment.  So if they miss a shot, they might get mad, but they know they better be ready soon to respond with the good stuff in their next opportunity.

Think and act like a champion and guess what… you will become one!

Great shooting and see you soon…
